I'm jealous of you!
(In a good way of course.)

OMG---I have been meaning to ask you over the last few days what the hell ever happened to your Vox World Tour! YAY!!!!

I have a thing on my iGoogle where they have a Japanese word a day, even with a little sound byte. So---you could learn about 30 or so irrelevant words in Japanese!

as for French--I only had one year way back in high skool and found I could get by very nicely with "Pardon, parlez vous Anglais, s'il vous plait?" They'd always say..."euhh..a leetle beet" yet were rather fluent (and much nicer to me than the yokels who'd go up and ask them in English if they spoke English). Their little bit is much more than MY little bit!

ANYway....Have a great time, I am so jealous!

So very, very jealous. Rosetta Stone is a great way to learn other languages. I tried to teach myself Japanese when I was 18 and the only thing I really remember, aside from some numbers and pleasantries, is sake o kudasai (give me sake). Could come in handy. ;)

I know a little Japanese and a little French, so obviously, you should take me along.

But to answer your question, there are tons of Japanese podcasts that will help you learn the basics. I would suggest learning all the polite phrases... The Japanese are infinitely forgiving of mangling their language as long as you're polite.

So jealous! You're going to have so much fun!
I have tried several times to learn Japanese, and the Canadian school system gave up trying to teach me French after several years too. So all I can say is good luck with that. Have a great trip.
Sugoi!
YAY. I'm so psyched that you guys are finally going!!
I agree with Clamhead, there are several good Japanese language teaching podcasts. One of the better 1's is Japanesepod101.com you can learn some of the basics to help get you by in Japan.

Japanese is usually a challenging language for english speakers since it differs so much from latin based languages so if you have difficulty don't worry you're definitely not alone, believe me I live in Japan and I still struggle with it. =)
this is so exciting! i'm jealous.

a website that i really like for learning japanese is this one. you can have a free account (which i've used), or pay for one that gives you a little more stuff.

happy for you both..(hoping to see post(s) of how it went)..have a great time!!! get techie gadgets in japan!!

Funny...I was going to volunteer Clamhead to be your Japanese guide. You ain't lived until you've seen an alabaster chick with red hair speaking Japanese trying to order vegetarian food at Tokyo Disneyland.

dude. rox!!!

i have to second cranky pants. I have been to france a few times, and if you do not speak french, but at least ASK them IN french if they speak english, they are much nicer than if you barge in and basically expect it... but i'm pretty sure you know that. thankfully, i minored in it in college.. (a hell of a lot of good that does me in CHICAGO. hahah!)

as for japanese... yea... konichiwa? sake? sushi? nigiri? that's about the extent of mine! haha. GOOD LUCK!

post lots of photos, of course... and try to take funny video clips!

yay exciting :D

<3

Thanks so much for all your advice everyone! I really appreciate it! We've got a couple Rough Guides books (obviously, as they're in the photo), and I work with a lovely French gal and she's going to help me out. As far as Japanese goes, I think I'll definitely have to check out the podcasts...

Or I'll obviously just have to take Clamhead with me. You'd fit in a carry-on, right? Just think of all the Karaoke fun we could have!

We'll definitely keep you guys updated as the dates come closer. :)
hi, I know I'm a little late but this site has always helped whenever I get cravings to learn a little bit of foreign language:

not like I've ever travelled so I don't need it. yet!
