My first snow...and it was just like I'd always imagined

Comments

Hee congrats. It is hard to imagine not having experienced snow before, but then I have been to California a few times so it shouldn't be *that* hard if I picture L.A
That's hilarious! I've only lived in places where it snows, so your excitement over it is both alien and refreshing. It makes me think about last Saturday when I looked out the window and said, "Oh, crap, it snowed last night."

I love love love this post. I absolutely know what you mean about the smell. I live in the sweltering south. Our definition of snow is definitely the gray slush that melts by noon. So anytime I am anywhere that has more than a few piddly flakes I become the biggest five year old!

I'm so jealous!

hahaha, I just had a MASSIVE flashback to the first time I saw snow! Believe me, I understand you, I was raised in Brazil! I don't know how old you are, I was 20 the first time I saw snow, and I reverted to the mentality of a 5-year-old as soon as I saw those snowflakes falling! I was with two Brazilian friends so owe all went around like idiots running around campus, taking photos, phoning our families back home there and then, and obviously haveing the piss taken off us by the rest of the Uni! hahaha Hope you enjoy your snow! i know I miss it terribly!

hee hee YAY! that it snowed for you!

My English friend sent me pics I don't know how many years ago when they got about a foot of snow. Maybe it was 6 inches, but it was more than we were getting so it was pretty funny to see. It should snow more in England, it's very becoming for the scenery! :)

I like the one of the Thames. i was gonna be like---your apartment does NOT overlook the Thames! (cause I know it would be like 3 million pounds a month)

Beautiful. I've only been to London once, and it was in July. It's even prettier with snow.

One thing I really miss about the five years I lived in Seattle is the once a year snow (which came on like a mofo this year, apparently). It was rare enough to be exciting and not annoying.

I saw some other Lo-Voxers post about the snow and thought, "where the hell is CupCate's post?" So glad you did one!

I can't believe you never experienced snow in NoCal but am happy to hear that you finally got a sample and reacting completely appropriately... nature's fun miracles (as opposed to earthquakes & tornadoes and the like) should always be appreciated!

Did you ever see "Harold & Maude"? (if not, rent it now!) One of my fav scenes is Harold using Maude's Odorifics (??) machine, with the New York cartridge, and the last smell he describes is "mmmm..... snow."

If more falls tonight, make a snow angel for me in the morning!!

I love your glee!

May you feel that way about many things...and always.

Thanks for the grin...and the reminder to stay giddy.

And LeendaDLL is right, that movie rocks. =)

Thanks for the scent-based reminder about the film. I realized I didn't own it yet so I just went and bought it ($9.98 + $1.40 s/h on overstock.com - in case anyone else is looking).

CupCate, I know you would love Harold & Maude! And, maybe like me, want to learn to play the banjo every time you see it!

Ohhhhh, yes. Snow definitely has a smell. So does rain. And so do months! (see the last paragraph)
Yay, it snowed. I get to spend the next several days parking at the bottom of Mt. Everest (aka my driveway). You do know that snow is cold, right? That was a bit of a shock to my Texan friend during her first blizzard season.

amazing photos. Love them. By the way, I don't think I ever told you congrats.
Miss you.

how beautiful, I hope you enjoy.

Thank you everyone :)

Was proud of myself that I actually took a couple good photos for once. Iain's usually the photographer, and I'm the "art director", lol. I can spot good shots, just don't have the mad skills to actually take the photo!

I can totally see how blizzards and 6 feet of snow would get really old, really fast. The snow yesterday was gone by 2pm. No shovelling required :)

I have seen snow before. (which probably makes me an even bigger loser for acting like a 3 year old yesteday, lol) I've been to Lake Tahoe numerous times, and Oregon when it was snowing...

But it never snowed in Sacramento!

There was something about waking up in my own home, and seeing everything, and all the scenery that I stare at on a daily basis with a white layer of snow. All the trees, the river, all the sidewalks I've walked on..And the entire world just looked different for a few hours. It was really, really refreshing.

It was really weird not having to drive 2 or 6 hours to see snow, and having it just be inches away from me all day long....

LeendaDLL-

Will have to see that movie! If you can knowingly pick out my kitchen/apron/christmas ornaments without ever *meeting* me I'm sure you're spot on that I would like the movie!.

Months DO smell :) I think October smells the best....

I am so jealous! We had a dusting a couple of days ago but it melted in 5 minutes flat! :(

We have a huge hill at the back of ours too and I am desperate to take my boys sledging!

Awwww...Cate! You lucky so and so... It sooo strange to read about someone getting excited about snow! Living in Aberdeen it's still a bit of surprise that when the snow comes down we all still get a little excited about it (then drive really badly)... but that's another story. Speak of which.. quick story...

When I was a kid I grew up in a small farming village called Kingsley which was on fairly high ground in the middle of North England (Staffordshire). When the snow came down.. WOW... it really came down. The electricty would normally be off for long periods too.

One year my mum was away for a day and we got quickly snowed in. We were old enough to look after ourselves so rather than attempt anything silly she stayed with friends and me and my sister settled in. Three days in the power was still of and all the roads were now completely impassible. Not even the farmers could get the roads cleared.

We were quite lucky in that we had a gas oven (rather than electric), and the local shop's freezers had been off for 3 days... so ... can you guess? Yep.. word got out that free pipping hot food was pouring out of our house.. and even at theat young age I remember a lovely feeling of community that's sadly lost now.

It's almost impossible to imagine being cut off (power & roads) for more than a few hours in 2007!

Right.. back to work for me :-)
I love the smell of snow and also do you notice the way the air smells the day before it's going to snow (tell me I'm not alone on that!). I'm rather jealous as we have no snow in Liverpool - just bright blue skies.
On my way to work yesterday I was stopped by a neighbour (an Asian gentleman) who asked me to take a picture of him and his little girl. It was the first time in his life he'd ever seen snow and he wanted to document the occasion.

Sunscreem-

That's such a wonderful story!!! Thanks for sharing :) I know, I can't remember the last time I lost power...Especially due to the weather!

Jan-

The air definitely smells different when it's about to snow. I stuck my head out the window before I went to bed that night and was like "Hmmm...maybe...."

Idiologue-

I love that story. It's just the simple things, isn't it?

JodiPodi-

That's weird! I thought you guys would have gotten more snow than us! Sledding sounds like so much fun, I haven't done that in ages!

I can't describe it but snow kinda smells... er... it's on the tip of my tongue. Well snow does have a smell, I know. Anyway, I love this post reminds me of the first time I saw snow. I grew up in New York and it hardly snowed while I was there 'till I moved to Iowa
Of course there is a snow smell :-) I loved your pictues. Hope you get some more to enjoy!
[this is good]
Aww Cate! I'm so happy for you! Martin told me it snowed and I asked him to take a picture but he forgot to... so these pictures are so nice to see :)

I can just picture you dancing around your flat in all your happiness. You make me smile.

Maybe you could come help me while I try and walk on all of the ice and snow we have around here...heheheh!! It has been quite warm and tonight it will all freeze and become a giant skating rink...yeah! Next time I slip and fall...I am sueing someone...guaranteed.

Enjoy your first taste of snow...I will envy all of the days spent in California.

Ahhh... I am still smiling thinking of you and Iain in the snow.. so sweet, so romantic.. haha. I'm gay. lol
i want to be in england when it snows! I am jealous of your bedroom view!
[isto é bom]
I can relate to this completely! I remember the first time I saw snow. Being from Brazil, you can imagine this was quite an experience to me. I was studying in Cambridge, England, and it was just incredible. I just had to leave everything else, and go outside. Nothing would ever be the same.

I can also remember a train trip just after the snow, too. The countryside looked just beautiful. The world was m-a-g-i-c - everything became pure and enchanted all of a sudden. I could not stop looking at my window. Time just stopped and I all I wanted was to be there, quiet observing...

Thanks!

I miss the snow and the passing of the seasons now that I am back here.
those pictures are so damn picturesque! i wish i could witness such a beautiful winter sight. but alas i live in sydney and our winters are more like spring nights. gross
Brownamazon's sense of snow:
City snow smells metallic and salty
Country snow smells like clean sheets
Early snow smells different from spring snow.
Granular, heavy snow smells like wet dog
Light, dry, fluffy snow smells like paper
We've lived with heaps of snow all our lives, but the first big snowfall is always exciting. By February it's getting pretty old, though.
Where I live, April, when all that goddamn snow starts to melt and turns everything sodden and muddy, smells like fish.
We were in the north of Scotland a couple of winters ago and they got about 10 cm. We thought it was hilarious how everything just shuts down for such a paltry amount. Nobody has snow tires and there aren't enough snowplows to clean the roads in a timely manner.
On the day I was born, my home city of Montreal got buried under almost three feet of snow. It was epic. My dad had to borrow his friend's snowmobile to get to the hospital. Now that's a snowstorm!
