I had the exact same experience with the Mona Lisa. Hordes of tourists in a six person deep arc in front of the thing ... all taking flash photos of it. At the time I was there (1995) it hadn't been put behind the protective plexiglass.
That's what the glass is for. There is a huge mural on the other side of the wall called "Oath of the Horatai" That would be much more impressive is any of the idiots in front of you knew any french history.
Yeah, I know the glass is supposed to protect it from people's flashes, but then the freakin' light from the flash bounces off the plexi glass. It's a fun game called QUICK TAKE A PICTURE BEFORE SOMEONE'S FLASH GOES OFF. lol
