Never considered it that way - I guess it's a disease, bulemia or anorexia, but still, self restrait, commitment, perserverance, and motivation are all things I respect very much.
It really worries me how backwards everyone seems to have it.
It's not self-restraint; it's addiction, anxiety, depression, distortion, and pure self-hatred.
Why do people think that eating disorders are chosen lifestyles that are perfectly manageable? When I say they are addictions, I mean it. You can't just go back to eating normally once you reach a certain "goal weight". People die from anorexia and bulimia, and there's plenty of warning before that happens. Blackouts, dizzy spells, headaches, and hearts that beat too fast eventually turn into heart attacks, broken bones, and kidney failure, and then, if you don't get help, you die. There's a point where you have to literally choose whether to eat and live or starve and die, because your body cannot live on 150 calories a day forever. After your body has eaten all of it's own fat and muscles, it starts to eat your organs, and then it's over, and you've accomplished nothing.
Our culture has given a very unrealistic image of starvation. Nicole Richie walking down the street in her neo-hippie boho-chic outfit that probably cost $5.00 to make in a sweatshop and $10,000.00 to buy in a boutique, huge sunglasses, floating along and making life look so easy. Think instead of shivering in three layers of clothes in the summertime, having to lie your way out of every activity that involves food, losing touch with people you used to call your best friends and crying every single day because you hate yourself so much that you are willing to die before you feed your body, because that's how it really is. And yet you can't stop, because you're still waiting for this to make you happy someday (it doesn't)
Don't admire it. Please be thankful for your health.
